Teen Smoking Cessation

Our goal for the Teen Smoking Cessation Program is to assist youth ages 14 to 17 in their quest to discontinue the use of tobacco, and to help them maintain a smoke-free status.

Furthermore, our goal for this program is to increase longevity, delay the onset of illness and disability, and to prevent teens under the age of eighteen from beginning smoking.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Teen Smoking Cessation Program consists of twelve – two-hour sessions held three times per year.

The program, facilitated by a certified Smoking Cessation counselor, will utilize pamphlets, books, short films, and other materials to accomplish stated goals and objectives. The counselor will also provide access to medical resources, if necessary. The program will address several key areas to smoking cessation, including:

• Education on the Harmful Effects of Smoking
• Identifying and Addressing Barriers to Quitting
Alternatives to Smoking
• Identifying and Eliminating Disparities Among Different Group Populations
• Building and Sustaining Motivation to Quit Smoking
• Anticipating Cravings, Triggers, and Planning Ahead
• Confronting Peer Pressure
• Establishing a Positive Peer Network (Buddy System)
• Peer Discussion Sessions
• Building Self-confidence and Self-worth
• Stress Management
• Sports, Fitness, and Exercise
• Teen/Parent Discussions
• Parent Support Group Sessions
• Parent/Participant Outing
